If you want to join the Scheme

The MRC Pension Scheme remains open to new members, supporting the next generation of researchers, specialists and teams shaping scientific progress under UK Research and Innovation.

If you have previously opted out of the Scheme, you can ask to rejoin by providing a written request to your employer. If you opted out to start taking your benefits while still working, it is not possible to re-join the Scheme. Please note that there is no guarantee that you will be able to rejoin the MRC Pension Scheme later if you have previously opted out.

What joining the Scheme means for you

You’ll automatically become a member of the Scheme

Your UKRI contract of employment will specify if you are eligible to join the Scheme and if so, you’ll be automatically entered into the Scheme provided you are aged 16 or over and under the State Pension Age.

What do I pay?

As a member, you contribute 6.5% of your pensionable salary into the Scheme.

Because contributions are taken before tax through payroll, the actual cost to most members is lower once tax relief is applied automatically. For many members, the net cost is around 5.2%, and for higher-rate taxpayers it may be lower still.

The Scheme is a Defined Benefit (DB) arrangement meaning benefits are calculated based on your pensionable salary and length of service in the Scheme. To learn more, visit How your pension builds.

What does MRC pay?

Alongside your contributions, your employer also pays into the Scheme to fund the balance of the cost of providing members’ benefits. This is reviewed every three years as part of the valuation.

The Scheme is managed by the Trustees, who oversee how the Scheme is funded and administered on behalf of all members.

Each year, the Trustees publish a report and accounts explaining how the Scheme is managed. You can find the latest version in the library.

Can I bring my other pensions into the Scheme?

The Scheme currently only accepts transfers from certain public sector pension schemes that are part of the Public Sector Transfer Club.

If you’re considering transferring previous public sector pension benefits, it’s important to know that:

  • strict deadlines and conditions apply
  • transfers usually need to be completed within one year of starting employment
  • the process can take six months or longer, so it’s important to act early

To explore a transfer, complete a transfer request form and return it to the Scheme Administrator.
